December has arrived, and with it, the holiday season—a time to reflect on gratitude and giving. Today, as I write this, it happens to be Giving Tuesday, an annual day dedicated to generosity, held each year on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

As Americans, we enjoy a lifestyle of unparalleled conveniences and luxuries. Yet, it’s easy to overlook how fortunate we are. Around the world—and even within our own communities—many face daily struggles to meet basic needs like food, water, and shelter. This season serves as a gentle reminder that any act of kindness, no matter how small, has the power to make a difference.

Giving Back at ISS

In honor of Giving Tuesday, we at ISS embrace the spirit of giving by supporting charities each year. To make this initiative more meaningful and inclusive, we ask our employees to share their favorite charities and the reasons behind their choices. We then donate to these causes, knowing our collective efforts are making an impact. It’s a tradition that brings us joy and underscores our gratitude for the blessings we often take for granted.

This year, we’re proud to introduce the “Above and Beyond Award,” an initiative to celebrate employees who exemplify selflessness and community spirit. The award was inspired by one of our team members who recently took unpaid time off to assist with hurricane relief efforts in North Carolina. Their actions remind us that giving isn’t confined to financial contributions—it’s about showing up and making a difference when it matters most.

Giving Comes in Many Forms

While monetary donations are impactful, giving back extends far beyond writing a check. Here are a few ways we can all contribute to our communities:

  • Volunteer Your Time: Help at a local food bank, mentor children as a coach or big sibling, or assist with community projects.
  • Brighten Someone’s Day: Visit a nursing home to spread holiday cheer with carols or small acts of kindness.
  • Support Animal Welfare: Lend a hand at animal shelters or advocate for adoption.
  • Small Acts of Kindness: Hold the door open, greet strangers with a smile, offer a kind word, or simply listen.

Sometimes, the smallest gestures create the biggest impact. A recent story illustrates this beautifully: A man noticed someone who appeared troubled. He invited the individual for coffee and a snack, then took the time to chat. Unbeknownst to him, that moment of connection stopped the person from following through with suicidal thoughts. His simple act of kindness changed a life.

The True Joy of Giving

Giving, whether big or small, leaves a lasting impact. Each action, no matter how seemingly insignificant, contributes to a ripple effect of hope and change. This holiday season, let’s challenge ourselves to give in ways that resonate most—whether through our time, resources, or compassion.

The satisfaction and fulfillment that come from giving are immeasurable. Let’s make this season a celebration of kindness and generosity, one thoughtful gesture at a time.

Happy holidays, and a warm and giving Giving Tuesday!
